Sun burn during winters


We often commit the mistake of thinking that there can’t be sun burns during winters. The sun may not be harsh during winters but the UV rays still affect our skin. It is important for all of us to protect our skin even during winters. With the onset of winters we are required to go and shop for a sunscreen that will protect our skin from getting tanned during the winters. Skin reflects your health. Young skin is delicate and more prone to developing sun damage.

We all know that our skin becomes dry during winters, and the sun causes more damage to the already dry skin. Too much light from the sun tans your skin and causes sun burns. So it becomes mandatory for all of us to wear a sunscreen with a SPF of at least 20.

The UV radiation exposure is greater at higher altitudes. If you are out on the slopes, any water surface reflects the sun’s rays and can double the UV radiation. To thoroughly protect your skin you need to wear a sunscreen which is water-resistant, and a hat, as well as eye protection.

Here are a few remedies to get rid of the sun burns during winters:

• Mix rice powder with curd and use as a facial scrub once or twice in a week on the tanned areas of your face and hands. Leave on for few minutes, and then wash with water.
• Drink lots of fluids and eat raw fruits to keep yourself hydrated.
• Mix gram flour with curd, lemon juice and a little turmeric to make a thick paste. Wash after half an hour, and then you can apply sesame oil.
• You can apply milk which is not boiled, with cotton wool on face and hands or any affected area Let it dry for 5 to 7 minutes and then wipe it off when it is still dry and then wash with plain water.
• You can also use a mixture of honey and lemon juice in equal quantities, and apply daily only on the dark areas. Wash after 15 minutes with plain water.
• The sun can burn the sensitive skin on the lips also, it is advisable to use a lip balm with an SPF of at least 15 and reapply often.

Sunburn should actually be treated before it happens. Don’t be under the impression that you don’t need a sunscreen during winters. The above mentioned remedies will help you get rid of sunburns.
