SKIN PIGMENTATION

Pigmentation is a disorder of skin complexion and color. Skin pigmentation creates a darker or lighter skin tone. Pigmentation is more common amongst the middle aged women. The first step in minimizing a skin pigmentation condition is to protect yourself from the sun and then consult a dermatologist about your condition and the various options available for treatment. Pigmentation is becoming a common problem these days.

Pigmentation is caused due to certain internal conditions such as menopause and disorders causing hormonal imbalance.

There are four main types of skin pigmentation conditions. These are:

• Vitiligo
• Melasma,
• Solar lentigo
• Albinism

Vitiligo is a skin pigmentation disorder that is caused by the lack of melanin. In this disorder white spots appear on the skin. This is mainly caused due to sun burn.

Melasma is a skin pigmentation disorder that results in hyper-pigmentation or dark spots on the skin of females. These spots usually appear on the face, neck, and arms and are most commonly brought on by excessive sun exposure.

Solar lentigo skin pigmentation disorder is caused by exposure to the sun like the other two mentioned earlier. Solar lentigo appears mainly on the hands, arms, neck, face, and forehead. These spots are very common in individuals over 60 years of age.

In albinism the melanin level is zero and the skin color is very light. Albinism is genetic and usually incurable.
