Skin care for seniors

Skin care should be given priority as it shields us from infection, impact and the environment. As your skin ages you need to provide extra care to it. As it ages it becomes thinner, less resilient and much drier.
As we age, the skin loses its ability to produce and maintain collagen, causing it to become less elastic leading to wrinkles. Here are a few tips that will help you take care of your skin:
• Avoid a daily shower or bath because that makes your skin dry. Drying is the largest skin problem among the aged.
• Moisturizing on a daily basis is essential since older skin cannot retain moisture. It is advisable to moisturize daily, especially after showering or washing any part of the body.
• Avoid scratching your skin because senior’s skin is thinner and far more delicate than younger people’s skin, scratching it can cause it to tear and bleed.
• Take care to avoid bumps that can tear the skin, or caustic substances that spoils the skin’s ability to protect.
• Reduce your alcohol intake because alcohol dehydrates us, it also dries out our skin.
• Protect your skin from the sun. Older skin burns easily. Stay out of the sun as much as possible. Wear proper clothes and sunscreen when exposed to the sun. Sun damages aged skin easily.
• If you are diabetic you need to take particular care in protecting the skin, especially on extremities.
• Exercise regularly for at least 30 minutes every other day, this will keep your oil and sweat glands active and healthy.
• Avoid strong antibacterial soaps that may have high pH, which can further dry aging skin. Use soaps and detergents that are alcohol-free and perfume-free.
• Astringents and products that contain alcohol can be too harsh and damaging for older skin. Avoid such products.
• If you are not aware of which products to use, consult health care professionals.
• Drink plenty of water: Staying hydrated will prevent your skin from drying out.
• Avoid smoking as it constricts the blood vessels in our skin.
• Start using specially made anti wrinkle or anti aging creams.
• Set aside some time in your daily schedule for skin care.
The above mentioned tips can work wonders for you only if you follow them regularly. Plan out an effective skin care regime for yourself, using the above mentioned tips before it’s too late.
